For the more than 16,000 Washingtonians living with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), dialysis is not a choice—it’s a life-sustaining necessity.

This is why the Northwest Kidney Council (NWKC) was proud to join with Northwest Kidney Centers for their annual Legislative Day in Olympia on March 18, 2025.

Together, we met with Washington state legislators to amplify policies that support kidney patients and dialysis providers. Advocates, patients, and healthcare professionals shared personal stories and highlighted the critical importance of protecting dialysis access across the state.

Advocating for a Strong, Balanced Dialysis System

During our conversations with legislators, NWKC highlighted the important role that all providers play in Washington’s dialysis network. From urban centers to rural communities, providers ensure that patients receive high-quality care—whether in a clinic or at home.

Key discussions focused on the need to maintain adequate Medicaid reimbursement rates. The rate increase implemented in January 2024 has been vital in supporting dialysis access, especially in rural areas. We urged lawmakers to preserve this increase in 2025 to ensure no patient is left without the care they need. Additionally, protecting the Kidney Disease Program and maintaining funding for Apple Health expansion remain essential priorities.

Strengthening Patient Support and Advocacy

NWKC and Northwest Kidney Centers are committed to supporting the whole patient—beyond just dialysis treatment. From transportation assistance to transplant coordination, these comprehensive services address the multifaceted needs of those living with kidney disease. This Legislative Day provided an opportunity to highlight the importance of expanding these resources and ensuring equitable access to care for all patients.

Looking Ahead

We are grateful to the legislators who took the time to listen to our stories and understand the challenges facing the kidney community. With their support, we can continue to build a strong dialysis care network that sustains lives and offers hope to those awaiting transplants.

As we move forward, NWKC remains dedicated to raising awareness, advancing policy solutions, and ensuring that every Washingtonian with kidney disease has the opportunity to live a healthier, more stable life.

Thank you to our partners at Northwest Kidney Centers for all their work organizing an impactful day in Olympia.
