As legislators descend on Salem for this year’s long legislative session, the Northwest Kidney Council is focused on key issues that impact dialysis patients and providers across the state. We remain committed to advocating for policies that enhance access to care and improve patient outcomes, like:
Diabetes prevention and obesity treatment
Diabetes is a leading cause of kidney failure, making efforts to prevent diabetes and treat obesity critical for our community. We are hoping to support legislation that promotes healthier lifestyles and expands access to obesity treatment programs, both of which can help reduce the risk of kidney disease.
Supporting dialysis providers
Kidney care teams play a critical role in delivering life-saving care to Oregonians. By supporting policies that streamline regulations and reduce unnecessary burdens, we ensure that providers can focus on what matters most — offering high-quality, accessible care to patients. When providers have the resources they need, patients benefit from better treatment options, shorter wait times, and a more stable system of care.
Investing in the health care workforce
Dialysis providers are part of Oregon’s broader health care workforce, which faces challenges such as burnout and, increasingly, workplace violence. We support proposals that enhance worker safety and invest in workforce development to ensure a stable and resilient healthcare system.
More to come
These issues are critical to the health and well-being of dialysis patients and the providers who care for them. The Northwest Kidney Council will continue to advocate for policies that create a healthier Oregon for everyone, and we know there will be more exciting legislation coming soon.
